The life of children in the brick kilns in Pakistan is desperate.  In bondage to debt – they work from 5am to 2pm in hot sun, and in winter cold. They make bricks in the dusty, dirty brick kiln compounds.  There is no relief if they are sick, day after day they must work.  Yet despite whole families working hard, long hours – year after year their debt increases.  Debt passes from one generation to the next, with grandparents dying in bondage and the debt passing to their children and grandchildren.  It’s heart breaking knowing that approx. 3 million people in Pakistan are bound in a situation that seems so hopeless.

Sometimes a little can mean a lot.

Without the ability to save all of the children, or the means to build schools, buy uniforms…it is easy to be overwhelmed.  So we started to look at what we could do…what if we started helping the children who had nothing, and began a school where they are?  Maybe, $500 NZ could start a school in a brick kiln community?

And that was how we began…starting by doing what we could do.

Every little step counts.  Every child is precious.

8 schools started in 8 months!

380 students were getting the chance to have an education.  10 teachers were working as volunteers giving huge contributions of time and commitment to see the children have an opportunity to learn.

We have just received a gift to start the 9th school!

Each student is given a school pack – that includes a backpack, exercise books, 1 book of basic Urdu, 3 pencils, 2 erasers, 1 pencil case, and 2 pencil sharpeners.

Schools are simple.  We have been able to get each school a carpet, whiteboard and a chair for teachers to sit on. It is basic – but it is an important beginning and something their parents are delighted to see.  It’s the first time many of the children have ever owned a pencil!

Amir Maseh has done an incredible job, finding venues, recruiting and supporting teachers, buying and distributing the books and resources.  He and his team are deeply committed to caring for the children and communities who live in the brick kilns.  Without pay or prestige, they are giving their all for the love of God, helping children in the brick kilns to find hope.

We would love to pay teachers some support – they have so little themselves but they are giving enormous time and effort each day. We would love to see schools in all the surrounding brick kiln communities.  One step at a time, doing what we can…

Ways you could build with us

It’s amazing to think that you can start a school in Pakistan, from right where you are!

$500 will start a school  (provide school packs and stationary and set up the classroom).

$1200 will sponsor a school and support a teacher  (helping the school run for a year).

Schools touch the lives of many children and a whole community.  We would love to see many more children in brick kilns have the opportunity to learn.

Could you help a school to start?

Would you be able to stand with a school, sponsor it for $100 a month and pray for it?

Anything you can do is a great help and a joy.  Any gift is received with great gratitude.

It’s been a huge joy to see some of the schools get benches, desks and a room.  One off gifts have made it possible to buy a motorbike for a teacher responsible for two schools, run a sports day and see a family gain freedom from the debt that held them in bondage.

It doesn’t take much to change a life.  A little can mean a lot.
